The Bachelor S23E3: I'm, like, BEFUMBLED.

January 23, 2019 Susan & Emily
150439_5228.jpg

Ahoy, Bachelor Buccaneers! Arrr, it’s your favorite time of the week, mateys. It’s time for Captain Susan and Captain Emily to man their ships: S.S. Here to Make Cocktails and S.S. Drowning in Bitches. Which ship will sail, and which team will walk the plank? Avast ye! Read on to find out. Remember, dead pageant girls tell no tales (or something). Here we go.

Susan: We’re back in the Bachelor mansion, where the magic happens. Except not this year because in case you forgot, Colton is a virgin. Don’t worry: the show will remind you.

Emily: The Colton cam is not back at the beginning of this episode, and I for one am not mad about it.

Susan: They’ve been hinting at the Miss USA pageant queens’ feud for a couple weeks, and we finally get a taste in episode 3, and it tastes like spray tan.

Emily: And yet we still have no idea what this drama is about, which makes for boring television, but more on that later.

Welcome back, Riverdale fans!

We’ve been gone over the holiday break because the show was on hiatus, but now it’s back and more bonkers than ever. Did you miss us? We missed you. Let’s just jump right into it.

(Also: it’s just Kelli and Mary this week, because Gabriella is off having fun in Mexico. We’re not jealous at all. We’d much rather be here, recapping this stupid show, obviously.)

The Particular Casual Horror of The Road Movie

January 17, 2019 Mary
Please bear with me as it is really difficult to find good pictures of this movie.

Please bear with me as it is really difficult to find good pictures of this movie.

The Road Movie seems like it belongs on a late night A&E marathon, tucked between episodes of Live PD. The film, spliced together footage from Russian dashcams, doesn’t have a plot to speak of, yet editor Dmitrii Kalashnikov manages to bring together dissonant clips in a way that makes sense.

Welcome back to the land of unfulfilled desires aka The Bachelor: Virgin Takeover. This week, we get not one, not two, but THREE Parks & Rec guest stars to help us through this trying time. Colton goes on his first dates this week -- two group dates and a one-on-one, and we hear for the 5,000th time how and why he has come to be a virgin. Buckle up because it’s only the second episode. We’re gonna hear a lot more non-sexy stories before this is over.

Team Drowning in Bitches and team Here to Make Cocktails face off this week as ladies rack up points for behaving in very Bachelor ways and ticking lots of Bachelor boxes. We also get our first freak-out, our first competition date, a taste of the Miss USA drama to come (hopefully), and some questionable outfit choices. Find out which team “won” week 2 below. Then ask yourself, “Are there really any winners here?”

The beloved hosts of My Favorite Murder recently started their own podcast network called Exactly Right, and I’ve been so excited to check out their lineup, which caters to audiences that like MFM (also known as: me!). First up on my sampling of Exactly Right’s menu: This Podcast Will Kill You. First of all, that’s a great title. Second, it does something similar to what MFM does — makes an unsavory topic (infectious diseases, in this case) totally cool to talk about. And you’ll definitely want to be friends with these gals.

More Lesbians, Please: A Conversation about “The Favourite”

January 10, 2019 Kelli & Emily
the-favourite-001-tf-03570-rgb-1546963439.jpg

Kelli: The Favourite (we see u, British spelling) is the latest film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. The film stars Olivia Coleman as Queen Anne, Rachel Weisz as her advisor and best friend Sarah, and Emma Stone as Sarah's cousin, Abigail, who arrives at the palace seeking employment. I feel like the most obvious place to start is with these three women, so my first question is: who is your Favourite?

(Spoilers ahead!)

The Bachelor S23E1: I Have Not Dated A Virgin Since I Was 12

January 9, 2019 Susan & Emily

Jump in a hot tub and grab a glass of sparkling rosé, because it’s time for the Book Squad’s inaugural Bachelor recap.

And Susan and Emily are tackling this a little bit differently from your average recap of The Bachelor, so strap in because this is going to be random. This is going to be experimental. This is going to be… THE MOST DRAMATIC BACHELOR RECAP… EVER. Until next week.

So here’s how it’s all going to go down. Susan and Emily are going to break this fabulous group of girls into two Fantasy Bachelor Teams. There will be Team Here to Make Cocktails (Susan) and Team Drowning in Bitches (Emily). Every week, we’ll check in on our girls and tally up points that will arbitrarily be decided upon based on whatever random crazy shit happens that week. There will also be random superlatives given out every week. Also we’ll recap the show a little too, we guess.

So let’s get this party started by drafting our teams. Are you as excited as we are?

This stock image model with cute socks and a cat is living her best book-reading life, but did Kelli, Susan, Mary, and Emily live their best book-reading lives in 2018? Lemuria’s inside entrance

Even though I’ve lived in Mississippi for the past few years, I’ve only been to Jackson once on a school trip. I’ve heard about Lemuria from friends, but never actually been there until a few weeks ago, when I invited myself on a trip to drop someone off at the Jackson airport.

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and the Illusion of Choice

January 3, 2019 Emily
Black-Mirror-Bandersnatch-2.jpg

Even if you’ve never before in your life watched a Black Mirror episode (WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU? GET ON THAT IMMEDIATELY… AHEM… back to our regularly scheduled blog post), you’ve likely heard of the latest Black Mirror “movie” on Netflix titled Bandersnatch, a Choose Your Own Adventure-style psychological thriller (?) that feels slightly different in tone than the rest of Black Mirror until you realize… you’re literally part of the episode and the jokes on you.

Perhaps that’s why so many people seem irritated about the whole experiment. Many reviews have labeled the latest Black Mirror a failure, accusing the show of focusing more on form than it does on content. And that’s fine. I understand. And maybe that’s true. Or maybe you just don’t like what the content of this particular episode is telling you about yourself.

Spoilers to follow after the cut, so please check out Bandersnatch on Netflix before reading on.
