Bachelorette S20E1: That's A Fake Mustache!

July 2, 2023 Emily & Bonnie

Bachelor Nation, the Book Squad team is back on their BS, recapping The Bachelorette after a multi-season hiatus (we quit halfway through Matt James’ season because it was giving us the ick). But we’re optimistic about Charity’s season, and we’re looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out (SPOILER FREE of course… no spoilies in the comments please!).

If you’re new to our Bachelor/ette recaps, welcome. If you’ve been here before, you’ll notice some things have changed and some will remain the same. Yeah, we’re still drafting and we’re still going to collect points for our Bachelor teams throughout the season. But this season, Emily is joined by a new co-recapper… her longtime reality tv-watching buddy, Bonnie Asato!

Bonnie is also a longtime Bachelor fantasy league champion, so the competition is going to be tough. For our first recap, we will draft our team, and in future recaps, we’ll recap the episode and dole out points for our guys. Now that you’re all up to speed, let’s get into it.

Shiny Happy People: Now Everyone Has to Know About Bill Gothard

June 9, 2023 Mary

© Courtesy of Prime Video

Sorry, world, but now Bill Gothard is everyone’s problem. More accurately, his cult—and I do mean to say cult here—is now the topic of Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, and the dangerous teachings of the IBLP (Institute in Basic Life Principles) are making national headlines in the wake of the high-profile documentary.

YA Book Club: Reggie and Delilah's Year of Falling

April 3, 2023 Todd, Mary, and Emily

Emily: Let’s start this edition of YA Book Club out with a little bit of honesty. After the last book we read, I really needed something light, refreshing, and (most importantly) actually good. Enter Reggie and Delilah’s Year of Falling by Elise Bryant. I have been looking forward to this one because of its cute premise. Delilah is a cool girl in a punk rock band. Reggie is a D&D nerd so deeply steeped in the culture that he writes essays about D&D for fun. They’re from different worlds, but they see something in each other that they admire, and yes, they spend a year falling for one another (just as the title suggests). I know a big pull for me was the D&D angle. And I know it was for Mary too. And D&D is such a huge pull that we even got TODD to join us for this month’s YA Book Club.

So hi, Mary and Todd. Thanks for being here. Tell me, was there anything else that had you excited about reading this book? Cause I know we were really looking forward to it.

SPOILERS TO FOLLOW!

YA Book Club: Hell Followed With Us

March 5, 2023 Mary & Emily

Mary: It’s time once again for YA Book Club, where we share our love of young adult lit by reading the most interesting picks we can find. Today we’re talking about Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White. This apocalyptic tale follows Benji, a 16-year-old transgender boy, as he attempts to escape his claustrophobic religious cult.

Queer Girl Book Club: Briefly, A Delicious Life

February 3, 2023 Kelli & Emily

Kelli: Happy New Year! I’m allowed to say that through the end of January, right?

Emily: I say ‘til the end of February. Let people ease into 2023. Haven’t we earned that?

Kelli: We may be a little late, but better late than never, and we are finally ready to discuss Briefly, A Delicious Life by Nell Stevens. I picked this book because we love queer ghost stories here, and I’m also a fan of queer historical fiction (girls kissing but it’s not ALLOWED? Sign me up). This one also sparked my interest in that it’s actually from the perspective of the ghost, which is something we don’t get all that often. Ghost stories are scary because ghosts are unknown, and with that element removed, a ghost story turns into something melancholic rather than horrifying.

How did you feel about the way this book approached ghosts?

In This House, We Watched Skinamarink

February 2, 2023 Emily, Mary, & Samantha

Mary: Skinamarink was poised to be the hot new horror movie of the moment, if you take TikTok’s word for it. I kept seeing videos touting how scary the film was, or how it was the best in a new wave of analog horror stories. After the youngest member of my D&D party talked about how much he enjoyed it, and after it got a limited release for one weekend in my town, I bought a ticket and went.

It was… not what I expected.

Let's Get Weird

December 5, 2022 Mary & Emily

Roku Channel

Mary: We are here today to talk about our best friends, Weird Al Yankovic and Daniel Radcliffe. JK, we are here to talk about Weird:The Al Yankovic Story, a parody biopic starring Radcliffe and focusing on Yankovic’s life – sort of. I know that both of us have been hyped about this movie for a long time – years?? Hard to say – so what drew you to it? Did you listen to Weird Al growing up? Obviously Daniel Radcliffe was a draw!
