Late to the Game: Hyper Light Drifter

November 8, 2018 Mary

Heart Machine’s 2016 game Hyper Light Drifter has been in my orbit since it came out. I’ve listened to its soundtrack--composed by Disasterpeace (of It Follows fame)--many many times as I write my dissertation. It’s a calming, ambient synth-filled journey, and it’s the perfect thing to have on in the background while writing.

But I hadn’t played the game.

Featured Bookstore: Ernest & Hadley Booksellers - Tuscaloosa, Alabama

When you hear “bookstore” in a college town, you typically picture one of those mega-corporate university stores filled with fan gear and running light on actual books. I was so pleasantly surprised to discover Ernest & Hadley Booksellers in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This shop is everything you could want in an indie bookstore (including our absolute favorite thing: shop pets!).

October 28, 2018 Mary, Kelli, & Gabriella
24-riverdale-303.w700.h467 (1).jpg

Welcome back, ghoulies!

We’re here for another week of cultish shenanigans, pop culture rip-offs, and plenty of shirtless Riverdale men. Were any of your questions answered? ‘Cause ours… weren’t.

Are You The One S7|E12: My Favorite Movie is High School Musical

Hey! Guess what?

The Truth Booth has officially confirmed that Tevin and Kenya are a match. Yeah, there’s no need to get all worried about this. I told you last week that, based on this magic thing called “mathematics,” we already knew Tevin and Kenya were a match. So really this isn’t a spoiler. This is just math. I know. Crazy.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get on with recapping this episode.

Riverdale Recap! S3E02: Fortune and Men's Eyes

October 21, 2018 Mary, Kelli, & Gabriella

“Fortune and Men’s Eyes” is the second episode of Riverdale’s third season, and also the 37th chapter of Jughead’s novel, which makes me feel really sorry for his future editor.

This week, questions are answered with more questions and the subplots spawn subplots, but we’re going to try our best to make sense of it all, just like we always do.

Why We Need Speechless

October 18, 2018 Mary
Speechless.jpg

I’m worried about one of my favorite TV shows right now.

Fresh Off the Boat (which I’ve written about for the blog before) and Speechless, two ABC sitcoms, are now part of the new TGIF lineup. Shows getting pushed to Friday night, when people are out doing bigger and better things, feels like a bad thing.

Susan's #PodSquad: Escaping NXIVM

Hold tight, #PodSquad-ers, because this one’s a doozy.

In addition to my love of true crime stories, I have an almost-equal fascination with cult stories. Sometimes the stars align and these interests overlap because, as we well know – ahem, Jonestown – cults and crime often go hand-in-hand.

At the intersection of cult and crime, I present to you: Uncover: Escaping NXIVM.

Are You The One S7|E11: I Know Where You Live

October 16, 2018 Emily

Welcome back Are You The One fans! I am so excited to be recapping this episode because this one was SO GOOD and I had to watch it multiple times just to make sure I didn’t miss out on any of the action for you. We’ve got betrayals. We’ve got scavenger hunts. We’ve got unicorn costumes. We’ve got Trump supporter Cam dancing around in a leaf skirt (see above). Really, this episode has a little something for everyone.

But let’s take a deep breath and start from the beginning. Remember last week when we ended half way through the Match Up Ceremony? Cali came up with a good plan for figuring out some of the matches in this house. Just to recap, they got four beams last time. So this week, everyone stayed the same and they switched up two of the couples. If they got four beams, that means the two couples who were switched are not matches. If they got two, that means those two couples are definitely matches. It’s not difficult math, but for some reason these idiots in this house don’t understand why this is such a good idea. Trust me though. I’m smart. It’s a good idea. So let’s see how it turned out.

Riverdale Recap: We're Back! S3E1: Labor Day

October 14, 2018 Mary, Kelli, & Gabriella
riverdales3.jpg

RIVERDALE IS BACK, BABY!

Our favorite murdering, backstabbing, dramatic teen trash fire is finally back on the air, just in time for Halloween. Season 3’s premiere “Labor Day” was WILD and had many twists and turns. Let’s get to it!

(You might notice we’re trying out a new recap format this season — and that we’ve also got a new team member, BSG contributor Gabriella. Thank you, Gabriella. We’re so sorry.)

Seven Lessons Buffy the Vampire Slayer Can Teach You, Even as an Adult Woman in 2018

October 12, 2018 Kelli
httpsstatic2.srcdn_.comwordpresswp-contentuploads201807Buffy-the-Vampire-Slayer-Season-1.jpg

Around two years ago, at the onset of spooky season, I decided it was about time that I sit down and watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time.

I’d been told by countless people that it was a phenomenal show and that it was right up my alley, but even with all of the hype and expectation, I was still surprised by the effect this show had on me. As many people will tell you, BTVS takes a little while to work its magic. I was enjoying it well enough, but it wasn’t until around the third season that I realized, quite suddenly, that I’d fallen in love with this show. By the time I reached season 7, almost every episode made me cry. I think I’d gotten the idea that by not watching Buffy while it was on television, I would never be able to connect to it in the right way. Obviously, I was wrong.

For a while, I’ve been planning to write a blog post about this show. There is a lot of excellent writing out there about BTVS already, and I became obsessed with figuring out a unique perspective to present. What is there about this show that people haven’t considered and written about ten thousand times before? Should I write about how the trio in BTVS presents a perfect parallel to the trio in the Harry Potter series? How about an examination of the loneliness of the ‘chosen one?’ A listicle about Buffy’s trench coats? There were a lot of different angles I considered, some of them more ambitious than others, but ultimately I decided that sometimes the best place to start is the simplest.

So, without further ado, I present: Seven Lessons Buffy the Vampire Slayer Can Teach You, Even as an Adult Woman in 2018. (There are seven because the show has seven seasons, but I didn’t correlate each lesson to a season because what do I look like, a professional? Cut me some slack, guys.)
