Riverdale Recap! S3E15: American Dreams

March 18, 2019 Mary, Kelli, & Gabriella
riverdale_season_3_episode_15_chapter_50_american_dreams.jpg

What exactly is the American Dream™?

After this episode, we’re no closer to figuring it out than Jughead is. Here’s what the American Dream isn’t: finding out that your mom is the new drug kingpin in town, or fighting a dozen different nerds convinced a board game has marked you for death, or moving out of your house because your mom has joined a cult, or, you know, breaking up with your servant/security detail/boy toy because he wants more than you’re willing to give him. Just to list a few random examples.

Shrill Teaches Self-Respect and Worth to Fat Women—and Everyone

March 17, 2019 Mary

For fans of Aidy Bryant or Lindy West’s work, Shrill is a big deal. Hulu’s new show is the first show developed by Bryant and Bryant (along with a slew of other notable writers like Samantha Irby, author of We Are Never Meeting in Real Life), and the first to showcase Bryant’s talents as both a writer and an actor. There have been many reviews of this show, not all of them favorable. The biggest criticisms--which I do agree with--are that the show takes its time getting started. The season only contains six episodes (probably due to Bryant’s SNL schedule) and a tight story arc. I argue that’s part of its beauty.

I was late to the game in seeing the first, highly praised season of True Detective, but I loved it when I finally got around to it last year. By that time, season two was already completed, and multiple people told me not to bother with it, so I didn’t. So finally, when season three showed up on my HBO Now homepage with Mahershala Ali’s face on it, I was ready to go for it again. Spoilers to follow.

We’re nearing the end of Colton’s season, and although it’s hard to focus on anything other than what’s going to happen during next week’s DRAMATIC finale, the beloved “Women Tell All” episode is here to bring us some solace.

(If your idea of solace is 20 women screaming at each other all at once.)

Well, Bachelor Nation, it finally happened: the fence jump heard ‘round the world. That, and Hannah G. gets the shaft in this episode, and we don’t mean the D. What made this “most dramatic episode” so dramatic? Let’s get to it.
