Did Love Island Thrive in Winter?

Fans of the UK’s reality TV show Love Island rejoiced when it was announced we wouldn’t have to wait for the summer for our next Love Island fix!

And I mean, thank goodness. I was really over having my evenings free to watch whatever television show I wanted. I always think Love Island is going to be too much tv for me to handle when I first get going, what with a new episode airing every night of the week except Saturdays. But then that first Saturday rolls around… and I find myself sitting there wondering what on earth they’re up to in the villa and how much I can’t wait for Sunday night.

So yeah. I was pumped for the first ever Winter Love Island. To make sure the islanders would be ready to spend their extended vacation in the villa in sexy swimwear, a new villa was born in South Africa. The series started airing in January 2020, and it wrapped up the final episode tonight (which… if you watch Love Island, you can only hear the word “tonight” in his dramatic voice when you read it). Another successful series in the books right?

Well… this series was not without its challenges and criticisms.

It’s finally here: Survivor: Winners at War, a season that could not have been more anticipated (or more needed) if it tried. After the debacle that was last season, every Survivor fan is excited about watching 20 former winners come back and try to win again. And guess what? If you put 20 people who know how to play Survivor on 2 separate beaches, good things happen!

February Foreign Films: Girl

When I chose the Netflix film Girl as my next entry in February Foreign Films, I was unaware of the controversy behind this movie.

I watched Girl, a story of a young transexual teenage girl who is pursuing a career as a ballerina, before reading about the film, which is always how I prefer to watch movies. I chose it because I love movies about dancers, and I’m also interested in stories that explore gender issues. My initial reaction to the content of the film is that it was well-acted, evoked emotions in me, and was, yes, at times disturbing.

I read about the film afterwards, and I think I have to acknowledge the controversies surrounding Girl in order to discuss this movie responsibly.

Susan's #PodSquad – Newcomers: Star Wars, With Lauren Lapkus & Nicole Byer

Comedy, television and podcast veterans Lauren Lapkus and Nicole Byers have never seen a single Star Wars film. They know nothing about Star Wars except some random names, phrases, and a couple of iconic moments they’ve heard over the years. In fact, they’ve kind of avoided all things Star Wars for their entire lives. Now, these two brilliantly funny women are joining forces (see what did there?) for Newcomers, a podcast that has them watching one Star Wars film per week, in theatrical release order.

Happy Academy Awards Day everyone!

As you’re preparing your at-home ballots and making your predictions, you might be trying to shove in some last minute movies so that you’re more informed for the awards show tonight. Honeyland was my last minute pre-Oscars foreign film pick, as it was nominated in two categories: Best Foreign Language Film and Best Documentary Feature.

Obviously, I think Best Foreign Language Film should go to Parasite, and very little can be done to change my mind about that. But is this movie the Best Documentary Feature of 2019? I had to find out.

Ah, it’s that time of year again. Time for me to become irrationally angry at a group of old white people voting for awards that don’t actually mean anything. I can remember the exact moment last year, finishing up my Oscars post, that I decided to delete my lengthy rant about how Green Book would probably win and replace it with the far more hopeful prediction of Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma. “It’s very possible,” I wrote at the time, “that the members of the Academy became aware of all of this criticism [re: Green Book] before voting, and not wanting to come out of this year looking like fools, have opted to cast their votes elsewhere.”

We now know that the fool… was me.

A year has passed, and although I am older and wiser, the pool of nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards does not display much growth. The nominations continue to be #sowhite, with not a single person of color nominated in the supporting actor or actress categories, and women have yet again been boxed out of the race for best Directing. Are we surprised? No! Are we angry? Yes! Will I be soap-boxing more throughout this post? Read on to find out!!!

CBS's Evil is Deviously Fun

In the fall, when TV shows premiere en masse, I reviewed some of the new offerings, including CBS’s Evil, a show that still--as I said then--confuses me. However, that confusion isn’t a bad thing. I believe the show deserves another check-in, now that the first season has ended.
