Riverdale Recap! S3E5: The Great Escape

November 21, 2018 Mary, Kelli, & Gabriella
“I want Betty to mace Archie” - Gabriella

“I want Betty to mace Archie” - Gabriella

This week, we give thanks for Riverdale, and count the many, many blessings that it has bestowed upon us.

There might not be a new chapter airing tonight, but we’re still here to give you this extra-special-belated-edition of the BSG Riverdale Recap — so read on for our discussion of “The Great Escape,” complete with a prison break, an allusion to Choni’s sexual relationship, and a truly sick pair of bell-bottom overalls (What store is Betty shopping at, and why doesn’t anyone else on this show go there?).

Ten Things I Learned from the Are You The One Reunion Special

November 20, 2018 Emily
Dr0FRH5X0AIBYcX.jpg

Look, I am real happy I decided to cover this Are You the One Reunion.

The tea was spilt. Hearts were broken all over again. Secret girlfriends were revealed. Exes were reunited. Post-show makeovers were executed, for better or for worse. Zak was yelled at and called a sociopath. New terms were defined. I learned so much from this hour of television, and I truly feel like I came away a better person for it. But did you accidentally miss all the drama? Not to worry, here I have aggregated the most important lessons learned from this Are You the One? reunion special.

Othersode #21: Swilda Tinton / Suspiria

Othersode #21: Swilda Tinton / Suspiria

Join the #BookSquad — er, #BookCoven — for a not-so-scary look at the new Suspiria, directed by Luca Guadagnino. We talk about what worked and what didn't work (but mostly what didn't work) in this re-imagining of the 1977 film. Is the dancing good? Why is Tilda Swinton playing so many characters? And most importantly, what would Suspiria sound like as a Rihanna song? We answer all this and more, plus we hear some listener feedback on Castle Rock! Read along with us for our next #bookpisode on Celeste Ng's Little Fires Everywhere, which drops on December 3rd.

Mr. Sunshine: Where Badass Ladies, Deep Dudes, and Korean History Meet

November 16, 2018 Julianne McAdams

I started watching Mr. Sunshine, or in Korean, Miseuteo Shunshain, because I saw it advertised on Netflix and wanted to learn some history (and maybe because I thought it would be the Downton Abbey of Korea).

I kept watching Mr. Sunshine for the characters. Is it sacrilege to say it’s better than Downton?

(minor spoilers ahead!)

Ten Poems to Get You in the Mood for Gratitude

November 14, 2018 Susan
Thanks1.jpg

Thanksgiving season is upon us, and let’s all take a moment to thank the powers that be that everyone abandoned that post-one-thing-you’re-thankful-for-every-day-of-November gimmick that plagued social media for the past three years. Praise be. But just in case you’re feeling like there isn’t enough gratitude out there this time around (because let’s face it, the world is kind of crap right now), I’m here to save the day. Here are 10 poems about being thankful. I hope these get you in the mood for ‘tude (gratitude, that is).

Are You The One S7|E14: I Like Everything That's In Your Brain

November 12, 2018 Emily
are-you-the-one-season-7-episode-14-recap.png

Aaaand… that’s a wrap, ladies and gentlemen.

Season 7 of Are You the One is officially in the books, and I heard on the grapevine that Season 8 is already casting. More importantly, Season 8 is looking for bisexual/gender-fluid people, so this should be interesting. How in the hell are those poor people going to be able to find their match when literally anyone in the house could be an option? I guess we’ll just have to wait until next time to find out, and I will be here to recap all of the madness. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. For now, let’s put a nice bow on this season.

Late to the Game: Hyper Light Drifter

November 8, 2018 Mary

Heart Machine’s 2016 game Hyper Light Drifter has been in my orbit since it came out. I’ve listened to its soundtrack--composed by Disasterpeace (of It Follows fame)--many many times as I write my dissertation. It’s a calming, ambient synth-filled journey, and it’s the perfect thing to have on in the background while writing.

But I hadn’t played the game.

BSG #21: Zucchini Moon / Goodbye Vitamin

Goodbye, Vitamin and Hello, new episode! This week the Squad discusses the plight of Ruth, a 30-year-old woman caring for her father, who has Alzheimer’s disease in Rachel Khong’s debut novel. We discuss the fickleness of human memory, the switch from cared-for to caretaker, the book’s narrative format, and the overall writing style of the novel. Then we get into some listener feedback about Fledgling (well, mostly about vampires). Plus, we tell you what’s on the #BookSquadBlog. Our next othersode will be on Suspiria, so get to the theater and get spooked!
