Othersode #74: If I Can't Have Two Men, I Can Have Cher / Interview with the Vampire

December 12, 2022 The Squad

Othersode #74: If I Can't Have Two Men, I Can Have Cher / Interview with the Vampire

It might be nearly Christmas, but it's always Halloween in our hearts, which is why this week we're talking about the new television adaptation of Anne Rice's classic, Interview with the Vampire. We're joined by special guests Ellis and Todd for a discussion of vampire rules, how the show's deviations from the source material play for us, how it stacks up against the original film adaptation, and, of course, gay stuff. If you have strong opinions like we do, please send us some feedback at thesquad@booksquadgoals.com and we'll read it on our next othersode! Stay tuned for our next bookpisode (and our last of the year) where we'll cover The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson. Then, to ring in the new year, Susan will make her triumphant return for a hatepisode on Colleen Hoover's It Ends With Us. Follow us on social media @booksquadgoals, and visit our website at www.booksquadgoals.com. Oh, and happy holidays!

Let's Get Weird

December 5, 2022 Mary & Emily

Roku Channel

Mary: We are here today to talk about our best friends, Weird Al Yankovic and Daniel Radcliffe. JK, we are here to talk about Weird:The Al Yankovic Story, a parody biopic starring Radcliffe and focusing on Yankovic’s life – sort of. I know that both of us have been hyped about this movie for a long time – years?? Hard to say – so what drew you to it? Did you listen to Weird Al growing up? Obviously Daniel Radcliffe was a draw!

YA Book Club: The Getaway by Lamar Giles

November 11, 2022 Mary & Emily

Emily: Welcome back to YA book club! We’re here to chat about The Getaway, the latest novel from Lamar Giles. We read Lamar Giles’ Not So Pure and Simple for YA book club back in February 2020 (simpler times), and we LOVED it. So we were super excited to pick this one up.

The Getaway is the story of Jay, who’s living his best life at Karloff Country, one of the world’s most famous resorts. We get serious Disney World vibes from this place. It is Disney World, basically. Anyway, Jay’s got good friends, a great family, and a job he loves, working after school at the property’s main theme park. Outside, the world might be falling apart, but inside the resort, people can escape from their problems. But behind this perfect community are dark secrets. When the richest and most powerful families arrive and don’t leave, employees discover that the resort has been selling shares in an end-of-the-world oasis. The world may be ending, but the most powerful people will remain safe. Now Jay and the rest of the resort’s employees will be the ones to care for them, whether they like it or not.

Spoilers to follow obviously.

Do you have thoughts on this book or on the film “Underwater?” Send them to thesquad@booksquadgoals.com. Stay tuned for our next episode on Netflix’s “The Midnight Club” on 11/14, and then read along for our next bookpisode on “The Women Could Fly” by Megan Giddings, where we’ll be joined by special guest Carrie (11/28)!

Such Sights to Show You: Hellraiser (2022)

October 28, 2022 Mary and Kyle

(Hulu)

Kyle: A question: is it too much flesh or not enough flesh?

Mary: Wow, this is a big thing to start off with, isn’t it? For me, this Hellraiser has too much flesh, because I personally prefer the latex and leather of the original. That said, I think the way the flesh was stripped off of some of the cenobites was honestly very creative. I’d never have thought to use skin as a stylish hood.

But maybe we should back up before diving into such a question.

As you might have guessed, friend of the pod Kyle is joining me to talk about Hellraiser (2022), the latest installment of the Hellraiser franchise. It’s been years since we’ve gotten a Hellraiser movie, and even longer since we’ve gotten a good one. I know that we’ve both been eagerly anticipating this release, so I’m pumped to finally get to discuss it with you. Or, well, discuss it more. We did talk about it when we watched it! What stood out to you most about this film? What were you most excited to see?

(Some spoilers for the Hellraiser series to follow)

Kelli: Regular listeners of our podcast and readers of our blog will know that there are several things we’re deeply obsessed with, and one of those things is the novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. We even did a whole episode about it! So you can imagine that we were very, very pumped when we learned that the book was going to be adapted for the screen, and that we’ve been waiting on tenterhooks ever since.

Othersode #72: Witches In, Children Out / Hocus Pocus 2 with Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson

Come little children and join us for our witchiest episode ever as we discuss Hocus Pocus 2. We’re joined by returning guests Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson, authors of Toil and Trouble: A Women’s History of the Occult, who contribute their expert knowledge to our conversation about the long-awaited sequel to the 90s Halloween classic. After the review, we dig into Toil and Trouble, covering Mel and Lisa’s favorite witchy research topics, their thoughts on witchtok, and the very real Satanic Panic we’re going through at this very moment. We also read some listener feedback from podcast superfan Susan, and from Jordan, who has waited very patiently. Read along for our next episode on 10/31 when we’ll be discussing Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield, and stay tuned for our 11/14 othersode on the new Netflix series The Midnight Club.
