Othersode #15: Solo: A Donald Glover Story

The Squad returns to a galaxy far, far away to discuss Solo: A Star Wars Story in this othersode. We get into the film's production woes, the reasons behind exploring this particular character, action versus world-building, the fate of the female characters, the dumb spelling of Qi'ra, how this stacks up to recent franchise installments, and THAT CAMEO. You know which one. Plus, catch up on what's on the #BookSquadBlog and read along for our next fullpisode by picking up I'll Be Gone In the Dark by Michelle McNamara! Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe. Send your thoughts on Solo to thesquad@booksquad.com!

The Bachelorette: No, We're Not Saying Becca's Stupid Catchphrase

May 26, 2018 The Squad
becca-kufrin-bachelorette.jpg

Welcome welcome to another season of The Bachelorette, and another blog post where the Book Squad judges all of the contestants based on minimal information and cheesy photographs. We’re fairly underwhelmed with the batch of men Becca has to choose from, and we’re already missing the wonderful men of Rachel’s season (where is our boo Diggy? We love you). But nevertheless, we’re here to… do the damn thing. There. We said it. Never again.

Nailed It!: The Anti-Baking Baking Show

May 25, 2018 Susan
maxresdefault.jpg

The Great British Baking Show is universally adored, and for good reason. Even the worst bakers of the bunch are still downright amazing. Everything the contestants create is not only complex, but visually stunning. It’s fun to watch it all come together. But we all know that about 90% of the population could never make even the simplest Mary Berry recipes the way these bakers do. Enter Nailed It!: The baking show for…the rest of us.

BSG #15: Call Emily's Dad / Station Eleven

BSG #15: Call Emily's Dad / Station Eleven

If the world as we know it ended today, how would you survive? What would you miss? Who would you be? The squad explores these questions and more in our discussion of Emily St. John Mandel's 2014 novel Station Eleven. Join us and our special guest Todd (a man) as we wax philosophical, argue about which character is the best, and gush through every last detail of this book, which—spoiler alert—we liked a lot. At the end of the episode, check in with the BSG blog and hear about Susan's bookstore of the month: E. Shaver, Bookseller in Savannah, GA. Plus, listeners tell us why they identify as feminists, and we announce the winner of our MOXIE giveaway! It's all right here waiting for you, so you'd better hurry and listen before your device runs out of battery and is donated to the Museum of Civilization.

Riverdale FINALE Recap! S2E22: Brave New World

May 20, 2018 Kelli & Mary

This is it, everyone.

We’ve finally reached the season two finale of Riverdale. Like the Serpents traveling as refugees from the Whyte Wyrm to the North, we have finally escaped. We are on the other side. We are free.

Mary and Kelli are back one last time to bring you this, their 22nd recap. Oh, wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, that has such people in’t! (said no one on Riverdale, ever.)

Featured Bookstore: E. Shaver, Bookseller (Savannah, GA)

May 19, 2018 Susan
E Shaver Outside.jpg

There’s really nothing quite like exploring a brand new city. Luckily, I had the opportunity to wander around Savannah, Georgia for a weekend in April, which was absolutely delightful (and not just because of the to-go mimosas I sipped on all day). And some of my favorite things to discover in a new place are the best little bookshops. After a little research, I came across E. Shaver, Bookseller, right in the heart of Savannah’s historic district.

Riverdale Recap! S2E21: Judgement Night

May 14, 2018 Mary

After last week’s BONKERS ep, we are back again this week, maybe one week closer to finding out who THE BLACK HOOD IS.

(Sadly, Kelli won’t be joining us this week because of Mother’s Day obligations, so Mary is flying solo.)
