My Favorite Reads of 2021 (So Far)

July 11, 2021 Susan
BSG1.jpeg

Since we’re a little more than halfway through the year, I thought it was a good time to check in on my reading goals for 2021 and reflect on my favorite non-podcast reads so far. I set a goal of reading 50 books at the beginning of the year, which is significantly more than I read last year, so this is a pretty lofty goal for me. While I’m ever-so-slightly behind schedule, I credit my progress to making a habit of tracking my reads. If you’re not already using the Book Riot 2021 Reading Log (made by author and friend of the pod Tirzah Price!), I highly recommend you start now. Using this log has changed my reading habits. I seriously get really excited every time I can fill in a new line on this spreadsheet.

Without further ado, let’s get into my top non-podcast reads of 2021 (so far)!

This week had departures, arrivals, truths, and dares! It had hot peppers, Lunchables, carbs, and giant ears! All of this and only one group date? How, you ask? Because ABC can make literally anything last two hours. Let’s see how the teams did this week.

The Bachelorette S17E3: Grinning Like A Clown from a Stephen King Novel

June 26, 2021 Susan & Emily

Sorry for the delay on the recap this week, Bachelorette fans! Susan and Emily needed extra time to recover from this particularly emotional episode. But we’re here, and we’re ready to cry all over again.

Please note trigger warnings for sexual assault, cancer, alcoholism… it’s quite an episode, but we’re here to guide you through.

Ah, it’s good to be back. It’s good to see Tayshia and Kaitlyn blessing our screens again. It’s good to be racking up points for things like sob stories and hot makeout sessions. Let’s see which team starts out on top this season.

The Bachelorette First Impressions: It's Cat Lady Season!

June 6, 2021 The Squad
The-Bachelorette-3-1024x683.jpg

The Bachelorette is back for a new season, and although Susan and Emily backed out of recapping the end of the last season of The Bachelor, we’re cautiously optimistic. Chris Harrison is gone, we’ve got two of our favorite Bachelorettes of all time (Tayshia and Kaitlyn) hosting, and we’ve finally got a CAT LADY as the Bachelorette. We Stan.

The only disappointment so far? Some how Bao, who was an early fan favorite when the cast was initially announced, didn’t make it to the final cast list. Frankly, this is appalling and we here at Book Squad Goals (or at least Emily) find it a little hard to get excited about any of these other dudes now that Bao is out of the picture. For real, Bao for Bachelor.

But anyway. We’re going to try to get excited about this cast anyway. Here we are doing our best.

The long (long) awaited film adaptation of The Woman in the Window finally dropped on Netflix last week. And while the release was met with excitement, particularly from readers, the reviews have been a resounding meh. Emily and Susan both read the book and saw the movie, and they have some thoughts.

Susan's #PodSquad: You're Wrong About

May 1, 2021 Susan
BSG1.png

I’m back on my bullshit, and that bullshit is talking about podcasts all the damn time. This time I’m here to talk about You’re Wrong About, which is a podcast I absolutely cannot stop listening to right now. Hosts Michael Hobbes (Maintenance Phase, HuffPost) and Sarah Marshall (journalist, currently working on a book about the Satanic Panic) delve into the stories behind the cultural phenomena, moral panics and public figures that we all think we know the stories of, but in fact, we’re wrong about. Here’s why you should check it out.

Susan's #PodSquad: Maintenance Phase

April 10, 2021 Susan
Maint Phase.png

For the past week, I haven’t been able to shut up about Maintenance Phase, a podcast that decodes and debunks everything related to wellness and weight loss. The podcast, hosted by Michael Hobbes (You’re Wrong About) and Aubrey Gordon (Your Fat Friend, What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat), examines everything from anti-fat bias to Weight Watchers to Dr. Oz to diet pills, and I guarantee that every episode contains information you’ve never heard before. Here are some of the reasons you should check out Maintenance Phase. Get ready to learn, unlearn, and gasp out loud when you listen.
