You Know What Time It Is: Revisiting 'Flavor of Love' 15 Years Later

May 30, 2019 Susan
The cast of Flavor of Love, Season 1

The cast of Flavor of Love, Season 1

As you know from our weekly Bachelor/ette recaps, I'm no stranger to reality TV dating shows. Thanks to Hulu, I've been revisiting an old favorite, VH1's Flavor of Love. Season 1 of FoL aired in 2006, when I was a senior in high school, and it paved the way for a slew of highly entertaining spin-offs in the following years, including Rock of Love (with Bret Michaels), I Love New York (featuring Tiffany Pollard, a contestant on both seasons 1 and 2 of FoL), Charm School, and I Love Money, among others. But for me, Flavor of Love is the OG of binge-worthy TV dating competitions. Here are some of my thoughts upon re-watching a gaggle of women vie for the affection of Flavor Flav.

The Bachelorette S15E3: I Want to Call My Own Shots

May 29, 2019 Susan & Emily
secret life of whatever.jpg

Oh boy, Bachelor Nation. There is a lot to unpack this week. Let’s just hop right into it.

Emily: So just to recap from last week, from a Team Sausage Party (Emily) vs. Team Frat-tastic (Susan) perspective, Team Frat-tastic stomped my team to death. It was a bloodbath. Will I be able to come back from such a staggering loss last week? Stay tuned to find out, Bach fans. Anyway, let’s just hop right into it. Chris Harrison shows up and is like, “So Hannah cried last night at the rose ceremony. That was fucked up.” All the dudes agree. Mike remembers fondly the time he asked someone else to get Hannah a Kleenex. Aw.

Review: Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me

May 23, 2019 Mary

Earlier this month, Mariko Tamaki and Rosemary Valero-O’Connell released their graphic novel Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me with First Second. Mariko Tamaki might sound familiar; she’s written graphic novels that have helped shape the landscape of young adult comics in general, like This One Summer and Skim (both illustrated by Jillian Tamaki).

Emily and I wrote about This One Summer--we both enjoyed it, and I felt particularly attracted to Jillian Tamaki’s art style. Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me has a different tone than This One Summer, though, and follows a different sort of story. Instead of following children on the verge of figuring out their sexuality through puberty, Laura Dean depicts teenagers who have already been in relationships and feel more secure in their identity (though we know teenagers are rarely too sure of anything!).

The novel focuses on Freddy, a young woman who keeps finding herself in and out of a relationship with Laura Dean, the smooth, fast talking, charming young titular character of the comic. Freddy doesn’t want to love Laura, but she can’t help herself. Instead of breaking things off and making it final, Freddy finds herself susceptible to Laura’s false promises.

(Spoilers for the graphic novel to follow)

Welcome to the first week of competition between Team Sausage Party (Emily’s team) and Team Frat-tastic (Susan’s team)!

This episode’s got it all: roller skating, a man-pageant, four wheeling, thrown chicken nuggets, and — most importantly — MISS J. ALEXANDER. Let’s see which cohort of bros (brohort?) racked up the most points in Week 2 of Hannah B(ama)’s journey to find a starter husband.

The Bachelorette S15E1: I Don't Know What To Do With My Hands

May 16, 2019 Kelli & Emily
the-bachelorette-hannah-b.jpg

If it seems like ages since an awkward Hannah B. fumbled through her words after Colton asked her to give a toast on their first date, don’t worry. It will be brought up directly and obliquely throughout the night. You might not know this about Hannah (now just Hannah; she’s earned it), but she’s just a normal girl. It’s basically her defining trait. Much like Colton Underwood’s story on his season was his virginity, Hannah Bama’s story on this season will be her realness, which means sometimes she is a “hot mess.” I mean, yeah, she’s still a beautiful blonde blue-eyed pageant queen, but okay.

Enough ranting. It’s time for our recaps of the season to begin as they now always begin (this is our second season recapping this show and our first Bachelorette season, so bear with us): with Susan and Emily drafting their Bachelorette fantasy teams. Only there’s a twist this time: Susan is on vacation so Kelli is here to draft Susan’s team for her, and Susan will just have to live with the results.

So how did our draft go down? Read on to find out.

Previously on...Survivor!

RON CLARK wins the loved ones reward challenge and picks Gavin and Julie to get the reward. Victoria and Lauren scheme, in case Rick has a hidden immunity idol (he does!). Gavin, using Aurora’s 2nd vote, and Lauren vote for RON CLARK, Rick votes for Aurora, and everyone else votes for Rick. RON CLARK is shocked! But he is finally sent to The Edge. What will happen this week is anyone’s guess, so let’s find out!
